Smart Hospital Technologies and Operational Efficiency: The Mediating Role of System Integration

The healthcare industry is experiencing rapid digital transformation through the adoption of smart hospital technologies that enhance healthcare delivery, resource management, and organizational performance. Smart hospital technologies encompass advanced digital solutions such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, cloud computing, robotics, electronic health records, real time monitoring systems, and automated decision support tools. These technologies enable healthcare organizations to improve clinical processes, optimize resource utilization, and enhance operational outcomes. Among the most important organizational outcomes is operational efficiency, which reflects the ability of hospitals to utilize resources effectively while maintaining high quality healthcare services. Although smart hospital technologies are expected to improve operational efficiency, the effectiveness of these technologies may depend on the degree of system integration within healthcare institutions. System integration refers to the seamless connection and coordination of various technological systems, applications, databases, and healthcare processes. Integrated systems facilitate information sharing, communication, interoperability, and coordinated decision making across departments. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between smart hospital technologies and operational efficiency while examining the mediating role of system integration. Drawing upon the Technology Organization Environment Framework and Information Systems Success Theory, the study proposes that smart hospital technologies positively influence operational efficiency through enhanced system integration. A quantitative research design was employed using survey data collected from healthcare administrators, information technology professionals, healthcare managers, and clinical personnel working in hospitals. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS SEM) through SmartPLS software. The findings reveal that smart hospital technologies significantly improve system integration and operational efficiency. Furthermore, system integration significantly mediates the relationship between smart hospital technologies and operational efficiency. The study contributes to healthcare management, health informatics, and digital transformation literature by explaining the mechanisms through which technological innovation enhances hospital performance. Practical implications are provided for healthcare leaders, policymakers, and technology developers seeking to improve operational excellence in healthcare organizations.
