Mobile Health Applications and Chronic Disease Management: The Mediating Role of Self Care Behavior

The rapid expansion of mobile technologies has significantly transformed healthcare delivery, particularly in the management of chronic diseases. Mobile health applications, commonly known as mHealth apps, provide patients with tools for monitoring health conditions, tracking symptoms, receiving medication reminders, and accessing real time health information. These applications have become essential in supporting long term disease management for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and asthma. Despite their growing popularity, the effectiveness of mobile health applications in improving chronic disease management outcomes depends on behavioral mechanisms such as self care behavior. This study examines the relationship between mobile health applications and chronic disease management while investigating the mediating role of self care behavior.
Chronic disease management refers to the coordinated healthcare processes aimed at improving the quality of life, reducing complications, and enhancing health outcomes for individuals living with long term health conditions. Effective management requires continuous monitoring, medication adherence, lifestyle modification, and regular communication with healthcare providers. Mobile health applications support these processes by providing digital platforms for patient engagement, health tracking, and personalized feedback. However, the success of these technologies largely depends on patients’ willingness and ability to engage in self care practices.
Self care behavior refers to individuals’ proactive actions to maintain health, manage symptoms, and prevent complications associated with chronic diseases. These behaviors include medication adherence, dietary regulation, physical activity, symptom monitoring, and timely healthcare consultation. Mobile health applications may enhance self care behavior by increasing awareness, motivation, and self monitoring capabilities.
This study employs a quantitative research design using survey data collected from patients diagnosed with chronic diseases who use mobile health applications. Structural Equation Modeling using SmartPLS is applied to examine the direct relationship between mobile health application usage and chronic disease management outcomes as well as the mediating effect of self care behavior. The findings indicate that mobile health applications significantly improve chronic disease management. Furthermore, self care behavior acts as a significant mediator, strengthening the relationship between mHealth usage and health outcomes.
The study contributes to digital health, nursing, public health, and healthcare management literature by explaining how mobile technologies influence chronic disease outcomes through behavioral mechanisms. The findings provide practical implications for healthcare providers, app developers, and policymakers aiming to improve patient engagement and long term health outcomes. Future research should explore additional mediators such as health literacy, motivation, and digital adherence.
